What We Learnt In Class

In the past week, as a class we were tasked to research things about audience to better suit our needs in the media. We learnt about various things by doing stand alone projects as groups of two or three. These allow us to understand the people we're presenting our product too as well as how it can better suit them.

For example one group of the class, did a presentation on the ABC1 demographic. This is the social grading scale that helps the media as well as institutions and day to day businesses. In the scale there are two halves. The bottom half(C2 and below) are considered to be Blue Collar workers. And then above are White Collar workers. These are the big officials and elites meaning they don't do much work and that their white collars don't get dirty.

Its a controversial scale and system. this is as it was made sometime ago when the positions of men ans women were very different. As Well as this we had very different social classes and we lacked a socially mobile workforce. If this system of grading is still in place does that not say something about how society has changed.. We need to consider what this means to an individual rather than the masses.

We also learnt about Maslow and his Hierarchy of needs. This is a scale that classifies people dependant on certain aspects of their life. Its an interesting theory and it proclaims that different things make people different. There is the top level who Maslow would proclaim only 1/100 people achieve in their life. This shows that true happiness is hard to achieve. This would create an aspect of Hedonism.
Then finally my group and I did a presentation on Audience Segmentation. This is a way that the Institutions decide who they manipulate their product too. This means that they use certain factors. Social Status, Income and what they do with the media. These allow these big Institutions to change thier product to suit the needs of certain groups of people.

It was an interesting task, and has made me more aware of what I need to consider when creating and planning for my magazine. This will aid me further when I try for my coursework.
